NEBS™ Technical Services

What is NEBS?

NEBS is the most common set of safety, spatial and environmental design guidelines applied to telecommunications equipment in the United States. NEBS is why telephones work after an earthquake or thunderstorm! The NEBS equipment design guidelines, (requirements and objectives in Telco-speak) are described in Telcordia documents:

The NEBS concept was first introduced by Bell Labs in the 1970s to simplify the design and deployment of telecommunications equipment in the Bell System. Telcordia, and its predecessor, Bellcore, has maintained the NEBS documents since the divestiture of the Bell System in 1984. NEBS requirements are utilized all over the world for a host of commercial, utility and defense applications. Still, the most frequent application of NEBS is to design and test equipment intended for use in Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) central offices.

Telcordia Technologies offers customized consulting, testing and analysis services focusing on the interaction between telecommunications network equipment and its environment, emphasizing service continuity and integrity under normal and extreme operating conditions. Our customers include manufacturers of telecommunications products, as well as many service providers (RBOCs, CLECs, wireless service providers and PTTs).

Product Analysis Services

Telcordia Technologies offers product analysis services to help equipment manufacturers demonstrate the physical and electrical protection characteristics of telecommunications products. The subject areas include physical strength, earthquake and fire resistance and thermal protection as well as lightning surges, grounding and electromagnetic interference (EMI). Telcordia Technologies's unique Piscataway, NJ test facilities provide capabilities to perform testing and analysis to Telcordia Technologies, customer and industry standards (national and international).

Engineering analysis and testing are also available to clients, on a strictly confidential basis, to analyze early-stage product designs and to perform prototype testing. These services can help in identifying potential environmental compatibility problems prior to product production, allowing changes early in the production cycle at substantially reduced costs.

Seminars and customized training sessions are also available to help supplier personnel better understand product standards, the telecommunications environment and end-customer expectations.

Analysis reports can be provided covering product compliance to documents such as Telcordia Technologies GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE, as well as related standards required by or developed by organizations such as FCC, CISPR, IEC, IEEE, ASTM, ANSI, and ETSI. Products evaluated cover a full range of those found in most networks such as digital switches and transport products (SONET multiplexers, DLC, etc.). Also evaluated are newer data networking products such as multi-protocol hubs and routers, xDSL products and wireless products. Testing and analysis is performed in Telcordia Technologies's environmental test facilities which include anechoic rooms and Open Area test sites for EMI, thermal chambers, seismic and vibration shaker tables, fully pollution controlled fire test facility and contamination chambers.
