When: 2nd half 2005 (specific date to be determined)
Where: Piscataway, NJ area (specific date to be determined)
Duration: Two Days

Telcordia is in the early planning stages for a Passive Optical Network (PON) technology seminar. Please complete the preliminary interest form if after reviewing the tutorial overview information you are potentially interested in attending.

Purpose: To provide an in-depth look at the most common Passive Optical Network (PON) access technologies in today’s market place, comparing and contrasting the technological foundations and functional requirements.

Target Audience: Engineering and technical business staff of telecommunication services providers, as well as other telecommunication Access Technology stakeholders.

Scope: This tutorial is expected to cover Broadband PON (B-PON/G.983.x), Gigabit PON (G-PON/G.984.x), and Ethernet PON (E-PON/IEEE 802.3ah) access systems. The focus will be on the Physical Media Dependent (PMD) and the Transmission Convergence (TC) portions of the controlling specifications, in addition to xPON system operations capabilities.

Topics are expected to include the following:

  • x-PON Basics (common threads shared by B-PON, G-PON, and E-PON)
  • Optical Layer (PMD) Overview
  • TC Layer Overview (frame structure, FEC, embedded operations channel, etc.)
  • Media Access Control (MAC) Overview
  • Dynamic Bandwidth Assignment (DBA) Overview (including transmission container (TCont) concept)
  • x-PON Start-up (adding an ONU to a working PON, ranging, initial ONU provisioning flows)
  • x-PON Security (Authentication and Encryption)
  • PON Survivability (Protection Switching)
  • Operations Overview (operations channels, PON Layer functions, PON MIB functions)
  • Ongoing Industry Activities
  • x-PON Deployments
