Telcordia proposes that a new issue (Issue 11) of GR-1275 and a new issue of GR-1502 (Issue 8) be developed, with industry input and participation, under the direction of the Engineering/Installation Technical Advisory Group (E/I TAG), a Telcordia-sponsored forum.

The E/I TAG is comprised of engineering and installation professionals from the Service Provider and Supplier communities that meet formally to discuss and address issues related to network detail engineering and equipment installation/removal quality practices, methods, and procedures. The goal of the group is to identify and resolve evolving installation quality issues, to provide installation service providers with the tools necessary to continually improve the quality of delivered goods and materials, and to provide Telecommunications Carriers with a codified, minimum set of requirements for quality acceptance.

The major documents administered by the forum are:

  • GR-1275, Central Office/Network Environment Equipment Installation/Removal Generic Requirements, and
  • GR-1502, Central Office/Network Environment Detail Engineering Generic Requirements.

GR-1275 details methods, procedures, and requirements for installing and removing telecommunications equipment, cabling, and ironwork. It provides the user with the minimum requirements for installation of Central Office (CO) equipment, including Switch, Transport, and Power equipment. GR-1275 provides broad coverage of all the generic requirements for CO and network environment equipment installation in one document. This is a resource that an installer, technical manager, technician, and equipment engineer can all use to verify installation quality practices.

GR-1502 provides the basic information required for a Detail Engineer to successfully specify telecommunication equipment installation projects. This GR provides comprehensive requirements for the generation of detail engineering output to the purchaser and installer of CO and network environment equipment. It is the industry-recognized document on the Detail Engineering process, reflecting the latest developments from industry discussions and the introduction of new equipment used in the CO environment.

Considerations for Updates

Recent issues addressed by the E/I TAG forum include update of the requirements for CO iron work and fiber-optic cable installation in GR-1275 and GR-1502. Technical topics related to the convergence of CO and data center environments are of ongoing interest to the forum. Also under the auspices of the forum are GR-1373, Engineering, Installation/Removal Quality System Generic Requirements, GR-454, Generic Requirements for Supplier-Provided Documentation, GR-839, Generic Requirements for Supplier-Provided Training, and GR-2981, Quality Program Analysis (QPA) for Telecommunications Engineering or Installation Service Providers. Technical issues in these GRs will be chosen and prioritized by participants to determine the scope of any proposed GR reissues.

The Value of Participation

Participation at E/I TAG meetings affords the members the opportunity to hear and share ideas that are germane to their quality processes. The benefits of participating in E/I TAG meetings include the following:

  • Opportunities to propose engineering/installation requirement changes to GR-1275, GR-1502, and other supporting GRs for consideration by the other E/I TAG members.
  • A forum to raise, discuss, and define engineering and installation quality issues and improvements, with three face-to-face meetings per year.
  • A forum to suggest how telecommunications carriers and suppliers might change their procedures and policies to enable your company to improve its processes or services.
  • Networking with your current and potential customers, other engineering/installation suppliers, and/or Regional Telephone Company peers, to gain a better understanding of each party's needs and concerns.

As a participating company in the development of Issue 11 of GR-1275 and Issue 8 of GR-1502, you will have the opportunity to influence the content of each document.

Telcordia Invites Your Participation

Pursuant to provisions of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, related to the development of industry-wide generic requirements, Telcordia invites all interested parties to participate in this GR project. If your company is interested in participating in this activity, please contact Telcordia. The resulting documents will only be available through the purchase of an Enterprise License. Such a license is included in the participation fee for this GR project.

To proceed with this project, it is expected that Telcordia will need at least six industry participants. While the project can proceed with fewer participants, deliverables may change as a result. The participating industry members will be apprised regularly of project status and any changes in deliverables.

Please read the conditions to participate.
