PISCATAWAY, NJ - September 19, 2005 - Telcordia is accelerating the penetration of commercial VoIP telephony services, with the introduction of the Telcordia® VoIP Routing Registry. Part of Telcordia's IMS portfolio, the new service, enables cross-carrier VoIP calling, driving the widespread consumer adoption of IP-based communication services. The Telcordia® VoIP Routing Registry, currently in trials at Tier 1 carriers and cable operators, paves the way for wireline, wireless and cable operators to cost effectively offer IMS-enabled converged services over IP networks, such as multimedia and video services.
"We forecast that the number of VoIP subscribers worldwide will grow from 9.5 million in 2005 to 97 million in 2009" said Patrick Kelly, Partner, OSS Observer. "One of the challenges in supporting VoIP is efficient call routing because of the many different types of access networks and local exchange providers. A VoIP routing registry is a sensible approach to improving network efficiency and providing CSPs with more control in the areas of revenue assurance and service interconnection."
As VoIP traffic and subscribers grow and VoIP carriers proliferate, cross-carrier call routing and administration becomes exponentially complex and expensive. Currently, inter-carrier calls for a VoIP or IMS-enabled service using telephone numbers are not routed entirely via an IP access network and, instead, are routed via the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Telcordia's VoIP Routing Registry provides a mechanism to centrally administer IP routing data so that VoIP calls can be efficiently routed over an IP network, providing carriers with an opportunity to dramatically reduce operational costs and significantly improve call quality.
"While VoIP introduces technical, economic and social breakthroughs, today, certain fundamental elements need to be addressed to make pure IP calling a reality," said John Roddy, Group President, Global Services, Telcordia. "Telcordia is the first and only company to provide a PSTN and VoIP routing data administration solution, enabling a smooth migration for inter-carrier IP routing. Based on our unique industry position, Telcordia's VoIP Routing Registry will be a catalyst for significant growth, cost reduction, and improved IP call quality."
Telcordia VoIP Routing Registry is one of the first solutions being introduced as part of Telcordia's IMS portfolio, which is helping carriers transform their businesses and is changing the way consumers and businesses communicate.
