Speakers: Keith Willetts, Chairman of the TeleManagement Forum
Chris Smith, Executive Director of Product Management, Telcordia
As the market demand and competition for new services gets ever more frenetic, service providers all over the world are re-examining their service creation and delivery processes and systems. Historically, new services have taken months or even years to introduce, usually creating a whole new 'stovepipe' of networks, systems and processes. And as services move from just connectivity-based to more content-based, service delivery starts to spread outside the operator's own domain.
The problem is not just how to create services rapidly but also learning how to deliver services as part of a 'value web' in partnership with content and application providers. Turning all of that rapidly into true end-to-end services, that work first time -- and every time -- for large numbers of customers without killing the bottom line is a major challenge.
Our first speaker, Keith Willetts, will discuss how the lessons of the manufacturing industry can be applied to assemble new services from pre-built components, some of which (such as content or applications) may be supplied by third parties. Keith will touch on several major themes including:
- IPTV and mobile TV will be major catalysts for change they drive a complex value chain approach to services
- How cost and time can be minimized with a "Dell-like" component assembly approach
- How service delivery platforms and product lifecycle management systems could revolutionize service creation
- How important it is for components, systems and processes across the value chain to be standardized if this approach is going to work
- How the telecom, media, cable and IT industries are collaborating via the TM Forum to create the right environment for this to occur.
Our second speaker, Chris Smith, will talk about repeatable processes as the "key to speed" for service creation and deployment. He will dig into how to create new services through an approach that uses modular, reusable elements including Component, Workflow, Policies, and Relationships with partners and suppliers. He will also address the industry issues in creating the rapid service delivery environment. OSS software needs to support modularity, through tools to create, test and deploy modular components. ISVs must develop standards based, configurable software, to ensure simpler interoperability across the OSS/BSS. And quite simply, service providers can and should demand this from their suppliers.
