Telcordia Real-Time Charging - Product Description Overview

As mobile operators begin introducing IMS networks, the challenge is to profit from the wealth of newly enabled services. Voice and SMS are already mature while data services are growing in popularity. 3G handsets are becoming more widely available and operators are reporting the first signs of rapid data growth. This new environment demands vastly more flexible charging capabilities – for content, with 3rd parties, and for IMS value-adds such as presence-based services. The new environment also demands real-time rating and service control so that operators may interact with consumers – making offers, redirecting them to interesting or appropriate sites, filtering inappropriate material, and generally playing a more significant role in the "call experience." As a direct consequence, Telcordia believes that over time all calls and data sessions will require real-time control, coupled with real-time charging capabilities. This scenario demands far more of a charging system – it must be smart, fast, immensely scaleable, absolutely reliable – and at the same time very cost effective. This paper provides an overview of Telcordia® Real-Time Charging, an IMS-ready online charging system that meets all of these seemingly contradictory requirements, and supports both IMS and legacy networks simultaneously.
