White Paper:
Network Evolution — Boosting Services and Profits by Solving the Network Equipment Information Challenge

Abstract

The network equipment industry is full of buzzwords like 2D symbology and scanning, auto-discovery, and Radio Frequency IDentity (RFID). They all represent approaches for identifying network equipment — keeping track of vast network inventory and the lifecycle status of network elements. Unfortunately, each of these methods falls short. The result is that equipment suppliers and service providers are shouldering excessive costs and unnecessary pressure on their narrow margins because of an industry-wide "network equipment information challenge." That challenge refers to the wasted time and money that are the result of operators, suppliers, and systems using different identifiers and tracking different attributes for network elements, equipment types, and lifecycle stages.

This white paper describes the symptoms of ineffective network equipment information management, identifies the root causes, explains why current management methods are not solving the problem, and explains why an industry-wide approach to the network equipment information challenge is optimal.
