How To Prepare a Scannable Resumé

Telcordia Technologies uses advanced technology to retain resumés in our database. This database is used by the Recruiting and Staffing Managers in Human Resources to match candidates against current job opportunities.

Electronic resumés are automatically sent to our scanner system. It is important to use ASCII text with no attachments. Paper copies received via regular mail are scanned using an optical scanner. Faxes make poor originals. It is difficult to scan them into the system.

The following hints will assist you in preparing a resumé that can be easily scanned into our system.

Formatting a scannable resumé:

  • Prepare a standard style resumé with normal fonts such as Helvetica, Courier or Times New Roman on plain white bond paper, one sided
  • Do not use italics, bold, underline, or shadows
  • Do not use vertical, horizontal lines or boxes
  • Avoid the use of graphics, columns, and reversed colors
  • Do not fold or staple
  • Print on a high quality laser printer
  • Your name, home address, phone number and e-mail address should be at the top of the first page. Use a separate line for each item.
  • Use standard paper size - 8½ x 11

Information in a scannable resumé:

  • Be specific when describing your experiences - use action verbs
  • List all skills, such as C++, Unix, CORBA
  • Use buzz words to show your understanding of the industry. Spell out all acronyms.
  • List all your degrees along with GPA's and dates of graduation
  • Include any certifications, associations, foreign languages spoken, and ability to travel.
  • Check spelling - it helps to have someone proofread for you.
  • Avoid any personal data
